HPA Position statement on trainees

All trainee clinical scientists should be employed using the band 6 trainee clinical scientist profile. Where trainees fail to match this profile then they should be employed using Annex U of the terms and conditions handbook and paid a percentage of the top of band 7 (the entry point for qualified medical physicists)

The current profile

It would be fair to say that the HPA do not endorse this profile, not having been invited to comment upon it prior to publication. We recommend that, should it be used, then it should only be used for Part I trainees. A Part II trainee in a substantive post should have a job description for that post which should be matched (experience suggests at Band 7) and the KSF used to manage the training, leading to full competence for the post. The easiest supporting evidence for this view is that Part II trainees require an MSc, which means that Factor 2 must score at level 7. This profile has a score of level 6, thus meaning that Part II trainees will not match to it. The issue is clouded somewhat by 4-year supernumary trainees who will thus complete all their training under one contract and post, for which this profile is therefore appropriate.
